Game of Thrones also known as GOT has some marketing lessons you can learn and leverage to shoot up your next or existing product. In this post, I will share with you 7 Digital Marketing Lessons From Game of Thrones. Read on to fine out more.
7 Digital Marketing Lessons From Game of Thrones
1. Have A Great Product
Of course, it’s expected that you have created a great product but don’t let me just assume. No matter how great a digital marketing plan or strategy is, if the product is wacky, the product would ‘un-sell’ itself fast. In fact, marketing would damage your brand image if your product is bad. That is why you should have a great product. With a great product, you would need little digital marketing to make your product go viral. A movie like game of thrones could go viral because it’s a great movie.
2. Integrate Digital Marketing Into Your Product
Many people hire digital marketers after their product has been launched instead of hiring a digital marketer even at the idea stage of the product. What I mean is that you should integrate your digital marketing plan into your product right from the idea stage. That is called growth hacking.
In the movie, Game of Thrones, you would see something like something like “tweet us at..” or “like us on Facebook” or “share this with friends”. These are just few things you can integrate into your product.
3. Get People Talking About Your Product
The more the conversations about your product, the more the sales. I learnt that from Steve Harris. There are two ways to do this: you can leverage on influencers or use your own influence.
Game of Thrones is being talked about by many celebrities online and offline.
The use of hashtags like #GOT and #GameOfThronesSeason8 helps to track and get people talking about your product.
4. Never Launch a Product Without a pre-launch ‘party’
One of the things that help great products like Game of Thrones is what I call pre-launch party. In the movie industry, they call this thriller.
Let me share an example with you: before I launched my Amazon best-selling book, I Have Been There Before, I had a pre-launch party. I gave out the book at 50% off its original price. It made people talk more about it and the post got so many shares on social media. One of the things that can aid your pre-launch or launch strategy is having a professional website. With a pre-launch party, you make people anticipate for more. I will discuss that in the next lesson.
5. Make Your Product Seasonal
With seasonal, I mean that your product should be something people would anticipate ‘what’s next?’. Can you think of version 1.0, 2.0 and so on? How about 1st Edition, 2nd Edition and so on? Let your product have a little bit of suspense. Game of Thrones has a lot of this.
6. Use the Magic of Storytelling
For a very long time, story telling has been one of the ways to capture the attention of audiences and connect with them. You can tell your product or even tell your start up story in a way your audience will resonate with. The stories told in Game of Thrones make it easy for audience to relate with the movie. Characters were being debated among viewers and so on. Use the magic of storytelling in your product.
7. Never Underrate the Power of Social Media
Where did you first hear or read about Game of Thrones? Most likely, you heard/read it from a social media platform. In one of our video posts, I shared how you can market your business like Jehovah Witness using social media. Games of Thrones gain huge visibility and acceptance because of social media. Never underrate the power of social media.
